The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
